   - Blow and sweep leaves and grass clippings back onto the lawn to prevent them from flowing into the storm drain with the next storm .  A clogged storm drain can result in flooding.

Picture
- Pick up and dispose of
litter in the correct way. Litter on the
streets and sidewalks can flow with
the rain into the drains, creating
    polluted runoff.

- When walking your pet, clean up! Pet waste can enter
into a storm drain with a rainfall event if it is not
picked up and disposed of properly.

- Minimize the usage of pesticides and fertilizers. Only use them
according to the manufacturer’s
label.

Storm water Demonstration Area located along the side of the Conservation Cabin at the Chemung County Fairgrounds, coordinated by the Storm water Team, was completed with the help of Boy Scouts from Troop 43, Pine City as an Eagle Scout project of Cody Vohees who worked on the Rain Garden.  The rest of the area was completed with the help of the Chemung County Conservation District.

Rain Barrel Program

Why use a rain barrel?

Storm water runoff is considered one of the main sources of water pollution nation-wide.  Did you know a 1,000 square foot roof can produce 600 gallons of water with a 1-inch rain event?  Roof runoff is a key contributor to the storm water runoff problem; while we can’t shrink the size of our roof, we can collect the water and reduce the runoff problem. For more information on the effects of storm water click here.

Rain water collected in rain barrels can be used to wash cars, siding, lawn furniture and to water gardens. Chemung County Storm water Coalition promotes the collection of rain water. For more information on the care & use of Rain Barrels click here.
